80,000 throng St Anne’s Feast

BUKIT MERTAJAM: The St Anne’s Church here was transformed into a fairyland of lights as devotees from all over the country and overseas took part in the annual St Anne’s Feast and candlelight procession last night.
The procession , the highlight of the celebration, was led by Archbishop Salvatore Pennacchio at 10.20pm from the open-air mass stage near the old church before ending at 11.15pm.
Among the crowd of 80,000 people who attended the annual event, which began on July 18, at the church compound were parish priest Monsignor Stephen Liew, Bishop Anthony Selvanayagam and Bishop Paul Tan.
As the actual feast fell yesterday, there was only one candle procession held this year.
Church volunteers shouldered the statue of St Anne, the maternal grandmother of Jesus Christ, and Mary, the mother of Jesus, on a platform resting on two long poles as they circled the church grounds.
Pilgrims sang hymns during the procession, which saw altar boys carrying crosses, candles and banners while flower girls scattered petals on the ground.
Petitions and thanksgiving letters that were earlier laid before the statues of St Anne and Mary were later burnt as an offering to seek St Anne’s help to intercede in their prayers.

Earlier, the pilgrims made their way to the old church and the shrine of St Anne up on St Anne’s Hill to give thanks for prayers answered and to seek her help and blessings.
Among those who came to get the blessing of St Anne and Mary was housewife Phyllis Chandran, 39, and her husband V. Chandran who had been attending the feast for the past four years.
“Though my husband is a Hindu, he has faith in St Anne and that’s why he is here,” she said.
Christopher Felix, 42, a medical representative from Malacca, said he had been coming for the feast over the last 10 years.
He added that he make it a point to attend the feast each year to pray for good health, peace and prosperity.
Lim Ah Seng, 54, a self-employed from Singapore, said came to seek St Anne’s help to cure his cancer.
“I was told that my ailment can be cured if I drink the blessed holy water from the church,” he added.

Penang Bon Odori Carnival 2008

Date: Sat, 19/Jul/2008
Venue:Esplanade (Padang Kota Lama)

Agenda:

A traditional Japanese festival with dance and drum performances held to welcome the homecoming of ancestral spirits.

Obon (お盆, Obon?) or just Bon (盆, Bon?) is a Japanese Buddhist custom to honor the departed (deceased) spirits of one's ancestors. This Buddhist custom has evolved into a family reunion holiday during which people return to ancestral family places and visit and clean their ancestors' graves. It has existed in Japan for more than 500 years and traditionally includes a dance, known as Bon-Odori.
The festival of Obon lasts for three days; however its starting date varies within different regions of Japan. When the lunar calendar was changed to the solar calendar in the beginning of the Meiji era, the localities in Japan reacted differently and this resulted in three different times of Obon. "Shichigatsu Bon" (Bon in July) is based on the solar calendar and is celebrated around the 15th of July in areas such as Tokyo, Yokohama and Tohoku region. "Hachigatsu Bon" (Bon in August) is based on the solar calendar, is celebrated around the 15th of August and is the most commonly celebrated time. "Kyu Bon" (Old Bon) is celebrated on the 15th day of the seventh month of the lunar calendar, and so differs each year. "Kyu Bon" is celebrated in areas like the northern part of the Kantō region, Chūgoku, Shikoku, Kyūshū and the Southwestern islands. These three days are not listed as public holidays but it is customary that people are given leave.[1]
Obon shares some similarities with the predominantly Mexican observance of el Día de los Muertos, such as customs involving family reunion and care of ancestors' grave sites.
Obon is a shortened form of the legendary Urabonne/Urabanna (Japanese: 于蘭盆會 or 盂蘭盆會, urabon'e). It is Sanskrit for "hanging upside down" and implies great suffering[2](Sanskrit:Ullambana). The Japanese believe they should ameliorate the suffering of the "Urabanna".
Bon Odori originates from the story of Mokuren, a disciple of the Buddha, who used his supernatural powers to look upon his deceased mother. He discovered she had fallen into the Realm of Hungry Ghosts and was suffering.[3] Greatly disturbed, he went to the Buddha and asked how he could release his mother from this realm. Buddha instructed him to make offerings to the many priests who had just completed their summer retreat, on the fifteenth day of the seventh month. The disciple did this and, thus, saw his mother's release. He also began to see the true nature of her past unselfishness and the many sacrifices that she had made for him. The disciple, happy because of his mother's release and grateful for his mother's kindness, danced with joy. From this dance of joy comes Bon Odori or "Bon Dance", a time in which ancestors and their sacrifices are remembered and appreciated. See also: Ullambana Sutra.
As Obon occurs in the heat of the summer, participants traditionally wear yukata, or light cotton kimonos. Many Obon celebrations include a huge carnival with rides, games, and summer festival food like watermelon.[4]
The festival ends with Toro Nagashi , or the floating of lanterns. Paper lanterns are illuminated and then floated down rivers symbolically signaling the ancestral spirits' return to the world of the dead. This ceremony usually culminates in a fireworks display.

With members that are recognized as the most sought after bassist, award-winning bagpipers, master tabla players and even a famous emcee and radio jock, Diplomats of Drum are set to create waves in the Malaysian music industry.

BALFA TOUJOURS (USA)

A brilliant young band that has been making a name for itself not only in the Cajun music scene of Southwestern Louisana, USA, but also in the larger realm of all traditional music.

The Balfa name brings back memories of the famous Balfa Brothers, who took their soulful music from the prairies to the far corners of the earth; today Balfa Toujours is making sure the name will maintain its place for generations to come.

The family-based group, led by Christine Balfa, daughter of the fiddler Dewey Balfa has taken the inspiration given to them and made it their own, creating a distinctive sound yet filled with the essence of tradition.

Balfa Toujours has been recognized as one of the most important groups in Louisiana, and has been touted as the future of Cajun music. Having performed in some of the most important festivals across the USA and Europe, the increasing popularity of Cajun music is largely due to them.

Balfa Toujours is a band at the center of the Cajun tradition, feeling no need to modernize the music, at the same time not seeing a need to preserve it. They play the music straight from their hearts, as it has been played in their family for hundreds of years.

LO COR DE LA PLANA (France)

From one of Europe’s most cosmopolitan cities come a dynamic all-male sextet set on preserving, resurrecting and modernizing traditional repertoires that were once kept confined within the four walls of the church.

With their music inspired by popular religious songs in Occitan (an old French tongue), from famous churches such as the Notre Dames des Doms, La Cor de la Plana is led by Manu Theron, Sebastien Spessa and Benjamin Novarino-Giano, 3 of the most accomplished ressurective musicians in France. Breaking from the typical sound mould of religious songs, instruments such as the North African bender, the taburello and even body percussions are thrown in their performances.

A performance by Lo Cor de la Plana can simply be described as colourful beyond imagination; erase the thoughts of dreary church tunes from your mind as you will be taken on a whirlwind expedition of different sounds such as baby gurgling to the baying of sheep interspersed with their songs, to the classical tones of Bartok right up till the renowned Massilia Sound System.
Having performed to multitudes of audiences, the group have garnered rave reviews by notorious media of having the capabilities of breathing new life into their performances with such a somber base.
